One Mom’s story of receiving donor breast milk

I just saw a great blog update from a mother that used donor breast milk.  It really highlights the huge benefits of breast milk over formula.  I would have loved to have this mother try our products to help her produce milk.

Top 5 things for feeling great after giving birth!

After a few months of getting settled with the new little one, you may feel in a rut. The overwhelming emotional roller coaster you’ve been on has finally slowed down a bit. You’ve started to notice the extra layer around your middle, and you catch yourself waiting for the next talk show. This is the time to get back that energy and feel great.

Here are 5 simple steps to feeling refreshed and new:

1) Get the baby out in the stroller and get out for a walk. It doesn’t have to be strenuous…just get out and get some sun. The vitamin D and fresh air will do your body good!

2) Give yourself alittle B energy! It’s no time to diet while breastfeeding but it is a good time to give your body the extra vitamins and minerals it needs to feel great. remember, you used up your vitamins making a baby, time to start taking care of yourself.  Pick up some healthy snacks to have around the house…cheese sticks, fruit or trail mix for easy snacking around the house. Dump the junk…get rid of excess sugar items that may bring down your energy.  Of course, every mother should also hide that one special candy for emergencies moments!  And don’t forget your breastfeeding multivitamin!

3) Get a massage! It is the perfect way to get some solid “you” time.  Plus, a great massuese will rub away those sore and painful shoulders and back from breastfeeding and carrying the baby.

4) Mommy play date…find another new mom and head to the park.  No, not so your kids can play (they are far too little) but so that you can share some time with another mother going through the same things you are experiencing.  The laughter and advice you share will refresh you in no time.  It’s a good reminder that we all go through these crazy times and that your child doesn’t have to hit every milestone perfectly to turn out fantastic!  If you don’t know another new mom, try taking a baby massage class or similar at your local hospital.

5) Go shopping! Pack your little one up and head to the mall.  It’s a great time for you to pick up something that fits nicely on your post birth body (which isn’t your permanent body, so don’t stress) and makes you feel good.  You can also pick out a cute baby outfit!  This is the time to shop with your little one because it gets much harder when they hit the toddler stage.  So, enjoy the hours now, browsing the stores and enjoy the many compliments from the store clerks as they see your adorable baby!

Help yourself feel great so that you can enjoy every moment of being a new mommy!

Breastfeeding in the middle of a war…or trying to!

I wanted to share this story that I recently heard from a mother…

I met an American mother that gave birth in Iraq during the war.  She was in an Iraqi hospital and feeling lost.  She was feeling overwhelmed, not because she was in a war zone but because she was having trouble breastfeeding.   A female doctor asked her what was wrong and she explained her story.  The doctor looked at her and then said in a nice straight forward way, “Look, there is no formula here – you’re the mother, you need to take charge and make it work.”  She told me it was that advice that got her moving in the right direction.  When you don’t have a choice, you make it work.

6 Advantages of Breastfeeding

Bill Murphy posted a great article that provides 6 key reasons you should breastfeed.  So, if you are trying to decide whether you should breastfeed or if you are considering quitting...I’ve quickly summarized the 6 reasons for you to keep going!

1) Breast milk contains anti-bodies that build immunity to help fight illness (diarrhea, respiratory problems,  infections, or meningitis) such as and reduce allergies.

2) Breast milk is free…no prep time needed

3) Smarter babies!!!  Breastfed babies have 5 to 10 higher IQ points

4) Less prone to overeating and obesity.  With a McDonald's around every corner, you'll want every advantage!

5) The skin-to-skin contact of breastfeeding creates better emotional adjustment for the breastfed babies, compared to those that aren't breastfed.  (It's great for mommies too...some of the best quiet time with your little one!)

6) Breast milk is easier to digest...less constipation.  If you've ever been a mom of a little one that's constipated...you know it's no fun!

Also remember that breastfeeding is great for Mothers as well!

Good summary Bill!  Check out the article for more details!

The party's started…and don't forget to "BYOBoobz"!

The new trend in parties…the breastfeeding sit in!  But this is no 70's style sit-in…the party kicks off at a top notch spa in New York where mothers can relax, share stories, and tips.  Don’t expect to toast with a glass of champagne but rather share party favors centered around the factual information for breastfeeding mothers.  The goal…help support and encourage new mothers.  I love it!  I think this is a great way for mothers to get the support they need to keep breastfeeding..they will realize the challenges they face are not unique but shared by others…and there are solutions out there.  If you are hosting a similar local party, email us and we’d be happy to share information for your new mothers!

Breastfeeding Gets A Makeover!

nuMOM nutrition pairs up with Best For Babes (www.bestforbabes.org):  Time to get rid of the booby-traps…it’s time breastfeeding got a makeover and “Best for Babes” is doing just that.  I love their website…promotes breastfeeding in a way that gives it the modern feel that our mom’s are looking for these days.  It shares the reality of breastfeeding- that it’s not always easy but definitely worth it.  We partnered with Best for Babes on a recent circular that went into USA Today to provide breastfeeding information for new mothers.  Our philosophy is that breastfeeding is the best choice (also supported by the World Health Organization) and that it’s not always easy.  That many mothers do face challenges when trying to breastfeed and we focus on providing the products to help reduce those obstacles to make breastfeeding a reality.  Check out our ad!

Breast pump fun!

So, you’ve got a little time on your hands while attached to your breast pump…what to do?!

I don’t think I can even count the total hours I’ve spent pumping after having three kids.  The rhythmic sound the pump starts to grind on your nerves and you start hearing words or phrases made up in the sound.  That’s when I knew I had to find things to do or I would go crazy.

I came up with some great things that eventually made the time fly by, almost too fast…would add an extra few minutes just so I could finish up what I was doing.

1) Read a book series..I loved Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money, etc series.  They are light, easy reads, that will have you laughing out loud.  And humor is a good thing during this phase of motherhood…actually it is in every phase!

2) Catch up on email or Facebook.  I am sure that many a friend hit “HIDE” on my posts after getting sick of getting the hourly update on my baby pooping, eating, and cute moments.

3) Load photos to the web and then get them out to family via email and the great online printing options.  I loved using Wal-Mart's photo option.  I would send over a load of photos and then go pick them up the next day on a baby and mommy shopping trip.

4) Update the baby book…or scrap book the other kids that you’ve fallen behind on.  I was able to get caught up on child #1 while pumping for #2...and got “some” of #2 done while pumping for #3...but #3 is out of luck!  If you have someone that is good at scrapbooks - send her my way!

5) Give your mom or girlfriends a call…they just have to get over the “whoosh” of the pumping sound but it’s a great time to catch up.

6) Watch TV...Hulu or YouTube videos.  A good chance to catch up on your missed shows.

There are a lot of things that just don’t work well.  I tried baking cookies but boobs attachments got in the way, and tried cleaning the house, but too hard to bend over or carry things around.

I am sure there are lots of other GREAT suggestions…help a new mother out – post your suggestions!

I must tell you about "Hands Free" pumping

I talked to a mother the other day that didn’t know about hands free pumping options so I decided to share this information on the blog.  I don’t think I could have survived pumping without the hands free bra.  I used that time to load photos on the web, call friends, play with the baby, read a book.  It made pumping so much more bearable.  Of course, the first few rounds of the hands free bras that attached to the breast pump were made with rubber bands.  It was a pain to hook them up just right so that the pump gained the correct seal.

However, Medela has fixed that problem and though it still takes a few minutes to hook on…it’s worth it.  I also found that I pumped more milk when I was able to relax and do something I enjoy during the time.  Another GREAT addition to the breast pump is the timer.  I don’t know how many times I started pumping, only to lose track of the time.  I couldn’t tell if it’s been 5 minutes or 20…remember, new mother no sleep!  I am a big fan of the Medela Freestyle pump.  Super small and easy to carry around.  I could actually fit everything into my purse, if needed.  Plus, it has the battery pack so that you can run it without having to be hooked to an electrical outlet.  I remember driving to Disneyland and pumping in the car on the way so that I could give my son a bottle of milk instead of stopping to feed on the long drive.

And yes, the last thing I will admit…I have actually pumped while driving (no, the kids were NOT in the car).  I used my cover and drove.  I don’t recommend this to anyone since it’s probably dangerous and I would hate to see the look on the policeman’s face if you ever got pulled over.
